The national referendum on Moldova’s European integration has a strong electoral subtext and is designed to mobilize the citizens to vote, said the co-chairperson of the League of Cities and Communes (LOC) Alexandru Bujorean. According to the politician, the bloc created by three parties - LOC, the Dignity and Truth Platform (DA Platform) and the Party of Change - will support the national referendum, but will tell voters that European integration does not mean only the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS).
Alexandru Bujorean noted that the political bloc LOC- DA Platform - Party of Change will take part in the consultations initiated by President Maia Sandu on the subject of the national referendum. The referendum was conceived as a way to make the people go to the polls in the largest number possible.
“We are aware that this referendum has a strong electoral subtext. The level of public disappointment in the ruling party is high. This image of the party is constantly dwindling and eroding. And an electoral maneuver was needed. This referendum also aims to mobilize the voters, to increase voter turnout. Absenteeism is Missis President’s biggest election contender. It would be cynical not to admit that Maia Sandu doesn’t have strong competitors on the center-right segment. But our position is that the comfort of any politician or party is not paramount. The most important thing is to preserve the external course of European integration,” Alexandru Bujorean stated in the program “Resumé” on RliveTV channel.
The politician noted that the bloc of the three parties will support the referendum initiated by President Maia Sandu. Also, the political entity will have its own presidential candidate in favor of whom LOC, DA Platform and the Party of Change will campaign.
“The situation is on a knife-edge. There are a lot of risks. We, the representatives of the pro-European extraparliamentary parties, are put in a situation where we either get involved in this process or leave it to the discretion of PAS. But not PAS is the European integration. We are put in a chess position to make the move. Obviously, we will get involved in supporting this referendum, but the political bloc whose creation we announced will also identify a potential presidential candidate. We will not campaign only pro-PAS or pro-EU, but will look further, to grow political forces that would ensure a pro-European majority in the future Parliament,” said the co-chairman of the League of Cities and Communes.
A new round of consultations on the referendum centering on the European integration will take place at the Presidential Palace on Thursday. Representatives of a number of political parties were invited for talks with the head of state.
