The number of Moldovans who choose to leave the country for good has declined for several years and in 2017 reached a historical low of 1,702 citizens who notified the authorities of the intention to settle abroad. The data of the Public Services Agency shows that 2017 is the first year after 1995 when fewer than 2,000 people left the Republic of Moldova.
The same source, which was quoted by ziarulnational.md, says 843 applications from those who decided to move and live in other states were registered in the first six months of 2018.
The largest number of departures was recorded in 2000, when 9,128 citizens informed the authorities about their emigration and performed all the required formalities.
During the next five years, the figure declined and in 2005 started again to grow. Thus, in 2007 those who decided to emigrate came close to the indicators of 2000 – 9,005 people.
In 2009-2015, over 2,000 Moldovans annually left the country. In 2016, there were registered 2,634 emigration notifications. Later the number of leavings decreased.
It should be noted that as of 1995, almost 130,000 Moldovans chose to leave the Republic of Moldova for good.
