Two more Moldovan athletes completed their performance at the Rio Olympics. Tennis player Radu Albot didn’t manage to qualify for the 1/18 finals, being beaten in two sets by favorite No. 9 of the Olympic tournament Marin Cilic of Croatia, IPN reports.
The US Open 2014 champion scored a victory by 6-3, 6-4. Albot struggled against Cilic after beating Russia’s Teymuraz Gabashvili in three sets. Radu Albot is the first Moldovan tennis player who ever competed in the Olympic Games.
Archer Alexandra Mirca also won a surprising victory. The 22-year-old athlete eliminated the world tenth ranked athlete Aida Roman of Mexico by 6-4. In the previous Olympic Games, Roman won silver, while in 2014 she became a world champion. In the second round, Mirca lost to China’s Jiaksin Wu 0-6.
China tops the medal table after three days of competition with four golden medals, two silver medals and four bronzes. The next positions in the rankings are taken by Australia (4-0-3) and the U.S. (3-6-4). Moldova has so far won no medal. Among the best rated are brothers Sergey and Oleg Tarnovschi (kayak canoeing) and Aaron Cook (taekwondo).
