The prosecutor general and the governor of the central bank will be appointed at the next meeting of Parliament, after the majority Alliance for European Integration (AIE) agrees on the candidates, said Speaker Mihai Ghimpu at today's sitting of the legislature, Info-Prim Neo reports. Today's agenda included, among others, the announcement of the nomination for the successor to central bank chief Leonid Talmaci, whose term expired. The AIE's candidate for the post is Corneliu Ghimpu, the speaker's nephew. However, the issue was postponed. “Corneliu Ghimpu is not my candidate, but AIE's. I just put forward a person who would be professional enough to meet the requirements of the job. But since things turned out in such a manner that family relations were placed above professionalism, I guessed it would be right to withdraw the issue from the order of the day”, Ghimpu explained. “The AIE had no objection as to the professionalism of Corneliu Ghimpu. But it is obviously that some sensitive issues could surface, which, unfortunately, appear in a small, rather parochial society like ours. These aspects could play a great psychological role”, said Marian Lupu, the leader of the Democratic Party (PDM). Lupu saluted the postponement of the issue until the next meeting, so that the AIE could have enough time to consider the subject thoroughly. Ghimpu added that there are many other candidates for the job, but refused to name any names. When asked about the rumors that the Alliance would nominate Ion Diacov, the brother of PDM's honorary president Dumitru Diacov, for the post of prosecutor general, both Ghimpu and Lupu denied it. “I would like to see a lady in that post, because women are kinder”, joked Mihai Ghimpu. “We have a manner of thinking and a way to act that doesn't leave room for favoring someone on any other criteria than professionalism, than the principle of the right man in the right place”, argued Marian Lupu.
