AH1N1 virus causes first death this year

A woman aged 42 from Chisinau, who was admitted in a serious state to the Municipal Clinical Hospital “Saint Archangel Michael” on January 9, died the next day after she was hospitalized. Lab tests showed the woman was infected with the AH1N1 flu virus, IPN reports.

Chisinau Health Division head Mihai Moldovanu told the website e-sanatate.md that the woman didn’t have a health policy and self-administrated inappropriate treatment before being hospitalized. “The patient went to see a specialist too late and, even if the doctors made every effort to help her, the body was already very weak,” stated the official.

Mihai Moldovanu called on the people to get vaccinated against flu in the immunization period and to observe appropriate personal hygiene. “In this period, we will insist that the doctors from schools and kindergartens should daily perform checks and should take the necessary measures in suspect cases,” he stated.

When the first infection symptoms appear, doctors recommend seeing a specialist, not resorting to self-medication. The symptoms of AH1N1 are similar to those of seasonal flu. The person has fever, cough, neck and muscle pain and also diarrhea and nausea in some cases.

According to the Chisinau Public Health Center, the public and private medical-sanitary institutions of the municipality during January 1 – 7 reported about 2,000 cases of acute viral infections of the respiratory system. In the period, there was confirmed the first case of AH1N1, in a woman aged 34. The state of the woman was satisfactory. It was established that in the incubation period the woman was abroad.
