Agrifood research institutions to be reorganized

The institutions researching in the agrifood industry will be reorganized through merger into five optimized bodies. A decision to this effect was made at a meeting of the Moldovan Academy of Sciences chaired by President Vladimir Voronin, Info-Prim Neo reports. The meeting addressed various aspects related to the process of reorganizing the agrifood research institutions, which is a start in implementing a relevant Government decision. According to the document, 16 existing institutions dealing in this field will be reorganized through merger into the following five organizations: the Botanical-technical Research Institute; the Horticulture and Food Technology Research Institute; the Soil Research and Agrichemistry Institute “N. Dimo”; the Research Institute of Biotechnology in Zootechnics and Veterinary Medicine; and the Agricultural Technology Institute “Mecagro”. According to a press release from the Academy, the president reiterated the necessity of reorganizing the research institute so that they would attain improved efficiency in developing new species and hybrids of crops and livestock both for the domestic needs and for export. The meeting was also attended by Premier Zinaida Greceanyi, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Anatolie Gorodenco, Finance Minister Mariana Durlesteanu, and Academy president Gheorghe Duca.
