Agrifood center to be set up in Chisinau
The Government entrusted the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry with the task of creating the joint stock company Chisinau Agrifoood Center and identify the plot where to build this national center. Shares will be issued afterward and offered to national and foreign investors, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The money earned from the sale of shares will be used to construct agrifood centers in Moldova's districts. The local public authorities and the regional development agencies will also contribute money. We will help the local authorities to found entrepreneurial cooperatives co-owned by agricultural producers,” said Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Valeriu Cosarciuc.
The agri-food market will have a three-level infrastructure, under the development program approved by the Government. The first level will include the packing houses located in the fields, the second level – the regional agrifood centers, while the third level – the Chisinau Agrifoood Center. According to Valeriu Cosarciuc, this infrastructure will enable to perform all the necessary operations – sort, wash, pack, freeze, distribute and export the fruit and vegetables.
The Chisinau Agrifoood Center will be erected near the Agrarian University. The project costs 640 million lei and might be implemented under a public-private partnership. The state will contribute the land, while the national and foreign investors will build refrigerating storerooms outfitted with equipment for post-harvesting operations, open-air selling places and other facilities.
Moldova produces annually 2.5-3 million tonnes of vegetables. Half of the production can be exported.
