Agriculture minister says bread price rises are unjustified
Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov stated that the bread price rises in Edinet and Drochia are not justified. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the official said there were no reasons for increasing prices.
”When somebody increases the price of such a sensitive product, they provide assessments and explanations why such a move was needed,” said the minister, stressing the bread makers in northern Moldova did not do this.
Asked to comment on the statements of economic experts, who said the Agriculture Ministry is not right when it maintains the prices of bread artificially, Vasile Bumacov said the bread is a social products and any price adjustment must be justified and in accordance with the rules.
The minister also said that the wheat started to be harvested. He urged the producers to sign contracts with the mills for grinding it. “We must avoid a repeat of last year’s situation when we had to halt the export of wheat on Christmas,” Vasile Bumacov added.
On July 1, a number of bakeries in the northern districts of the country increased the price of bread by 0.5 lei on average.
