A number of associations representing agricultural producers made a call to the farmers to take part in a protest that will be mounted in the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau on May 28, IPN reports.

Chairman of the National Farmers Federation of Moldova Valeriu Cosarciuc told a news conference that the producers must find time and come to Chisinau because the planned protest is a demonstration of dignity of the people working in the agricultural sector. The producers support the path to European integration, but consider that the policies on agriculture and rural development must also be European.

The protest will be peaceful. The participants will support no political party and no money will be paid for presence, said chairman of the National Union of Agricultural Producers Associations “UniAgroProtect” Alexandru Slusari. The farmers will express their dissatisfaction with the delay in adopting the changes to the Law on Oil Products by which the producers or groups of producers are allowed to directly import diesel fuel for the production process.

Deputy head of another farmers’ organization “Agroinform” Iurie Hurmuzachi said that if the problems faced in the field had been solved, they wouldn’t have resorted to protests. For example, the adoption of the regulations concerning the oil products market has been proponed for two years and the state institution responsible for promoting this bill will amendments is not known.

Iurie Fala, of the Association “Moldova-Fruct”, said that these changes will enable the producers to save about 500 million lei a year, which is equal to the size of the agriculture subsidization fund for 2014. The modernization of agriculture and rural areas is essential in the European integration process. For this objective to be achieved, the authorities should change their attitude.

The protest is expected to involve 4,000 – 5,000 agricultural producers, carriers, agriculture trade unions and other people.
