Aggressive behavior of drivers in traffic will be punished

The Cabinet endorsed the legislative initiative of a group of MPs concerning the legislation on actions that represent aggressive behavior in traffic and the punishment for this, IPN reports.

The bill describes as aggressive behavior the maneuvers in road traffic that unjustifiably cause obstacles in traffic and affects the rights of other traffic participants. Motorists are recommended to avoid causing dangerous situations while driving and to anticipate and avoid such situations when they can be caused by other traffic participants.

Depending on the gravity of the committed violations, the drivers will be punished with fines and penalty points or with community service. Amendments are to be made to the Law on Road Traffic and the Contravention Code of the Republic of Moldova.

According to statistics, over 90% of the accidents occur through the drivers’ fault, while among the main causes of accidents are speeding and non-adjustment of speed to road conditions, not giving of way at crosswalks or pedestrian passages and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
