Starting with the age of 35, everyone should have tests to detect possible disorders of the thyroid gland, once in five years. In connection with World Thyroid Day that is celebrated on May 25, specialists worn about the importance of early detecting thyroid disorders, IPN reports.
Over 2,000 cases of thyroid diseases were treated at the National Clinical Hospital “Timofei Mosneaga” last year. Endocrinologist Gheorghe Caradja said the person should mandatorily see a doctor if this loses weight, is nervous, suffers from diarrhea, has heart arrhythmia, irregular menstrual periods or fatigue.
Most of the thyroid disorders are treated with medicines. Drugs with thyroid hormones are administered in case of hypothyroidism. The dose is determined based on the severity of the disease. Anti-thyroidal medicines, radioactive iodine or surgical treatment are used in the case of hyperthyroidism.
The thyroid disorders are mainly treated in ambulatory conditions during a long period of time, under the supervision of endocrinologists. Only the persons who suffer from serious forms of the disease, with complications in different systems, primarily the cardiovascular one, need hospitalization.
Only 5% of the thyroid nodules are cancerous. Thyroid cancer develops slowly and the diagnosis is made based on puncture. The thyroid is fully eliminated in this case and the patients receive treatment with radioactive iodine to fully eliminate the cancerous cells. Medicines to replace the functions of the thyroid glands are taken throughout life.
