There are myths in Moldovan society that the parties of the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) have obscure and hidden interests. “I listened to the leaders of the alliance and realized that they understand what’s going on in society, but the created myths persist and I think that if obscure goals hadn’t existed, the law enforcement bodies wouldn’t have been politicized,” expert Igor Botan, executive director of the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT), said in the public debates “The Alliance consists of allies, while the government team of fellow members? The culture of political relations in government: manifestations, stakes and effects” that were staged by Info-Prim Neo on May 29. According to Igor Botan, the fact that the law enforcement bodies are now politicized shows that those who are in power divided between them the spheres of influence. “Even the way in which the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime will be reformed makes me think that there are obscure interests. Strange things also happen to the company Tutun CTC,” said the expert. The director of ADEPT considers that for these perceptions and myths about the obscure interests to be dissipated, the AEI should make effort to depoliticize the law enforcement bodies and the management of the state-run companies, as it planned in its constitution agreement. “We, the people, will thus have the certitude that the ruling alliance can do it with effort and the support of society,” added Igor Botan. As to the statements that the established democracies needed long periods of time to reach the current stage, the expert said that Moldova cannot be compared with the countries that made progress in the democratization process gradually as they were empires and had resources. “We can do many things, but the problem resides in the implementation of measures. The government should strictly respect the democratic procedures so that those from the opposition have no reasons to challenge the European integration vector,” Igor Botan said in the debates. The debates organized by Info-Prim Neo form part of the Development of the Political Culture through Public Debates Project that is supported by the German foundation Hanns Seidel.
