AEI: There will be more possibilities of electing President after referendum

The leaders of the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) said the Constitution will provide more possibilities of electing the head of state after the referendum is held, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to them, by this referendum they want to simplify and democratize the mechanism of electing the President, remove the semi-presidential hybrid and establish an authentic parliamentary system of government. The process of electing the head of state will not lead to the dissolution of Parliament. ”There will be several possibilities. If the President is not elected in the first round, the second possibility will appear. If the head of state is not voted in again, the third possibility will appear and will end with the election of the President in any case,” Valeriu Strelet, the head of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group, said in the program “Replica” on Prime TV. Valeriu Strelet stated that the AEI is decided to mobilize the potential of all the parties of the AEI and in the period before the referendum will make effort to diminish the hysteria disseminated in society by the opposition. The leader of the Democratic group Dumitru Diacov said the idea of a referendum appeared long before. “I suggested holding a referendum even last spring as it was clear that the lack of several votes will create tensions. But we realized its necessity only in a year because in Moldova there is no political culture,” he stated. He also said that in the conditions of a coalition government, with the polls showing that the same parties and the same players will enter Parliament as a result of new elections, it is better to amend the Constitution in order to overcome the political crisis. “It is a call to the people. There is no country in the world where the legislative body that elects the President is dissolved,” said Dumitru Diacov. Ion Hadirca, the head of the parliamentary group of the Liberal Party, said a diplomatic language was used in the dialogue with the opposition even if it was evident that it was a farce from the very beginning. “They imposed the same conditions as before. Things changed after the Constitutional Court pronounced its decision. They tried to test our capacities so as to make us elect a President with a minimum number of votes or to provoke early legislative elections. We rejected the idea of early elections as it is expensive and will lead to nowhere,” he said. On January 15, the leaders of the AEI decided to organize a referendum to amend the Constitution of Moldova and simplify the procedure for electing the head of state.
