AEI leaders do not trust Voronin's sincerity
The leaders of the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) say they do not trust the sincerity of the Communist leader, Vladimir Voronin, who invited them on Friday to sign a pact of understanding. Instead, the leaders of the four-party AEI say they will make a joint decision on the amendment of Article 78 of the Moldova Constitution, which regulates the election of the president, but not before the completion of the consultations with the European partners and civil society.
Acting president Mihai Ghimpu, the chairman of the Liberal Party, said he would call the AEI leaders next week to discuss solutions for the constitutional stalemate. “I will agree to any proposal that will help to solve the constitution crisis”, he said.
Prime Minister Vlad Filat, the Lib-Dem leader, described Voronin's proposal as very strange. “I doubt Voronin's sincerity, since believing him means disrespecting yourself”, declared Filat.
Democrat leader Marian Lupu recommends waiting until consultations within AEI come to an end. A final position could be voiced by March's end or in early April. As for Voronin's proposal, Marian Lupu said “the devil often hides behind details”. “Such decisions shouldn't be based on an ultimatum or unilateral conditions”, he added.
The Moldova Noastra leader Serafim Urecheanu said he knew from reliable sources that Vladimir Voronin was planning a hoax.
In an appeal today, the Communist leader proposed the parties represented in Parliament should reach a compromise, no later than March 31, over the dates when the Parliament should be dissolved and when early legislative elections should take place. The legislative initiative on the modification of article 78 of the Constitution, concerning the procedure for electing the head of state, should be submitted by April 2. The five parliamentary groups should appeal to the Constitutional Court and ask it to pronounce on the opportunity of examining this initiative by May 20.
