AEI intends to fix date of presidential elections by Wednesday
The leaders of the Alliance for European Integration (AEI) announced that the date of the presidential elections will be set in the March 7 sitting of Parliament at the latest. The Liberal Party says yet that the date will be set if a candidate who meets all the criteria of the parties taking part in the voting is identified. Related statements were made after the March 5 meeting of the AEI Council, Info-Prim Neo reports.
”We discussed not only the candidate for the presidency. But this issue was the main one. We go in the right direction and a clear solution to this situation will be found soon. I’m confident that the President will be elected. Veronica Bacalu remains the candidate for this post,” the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Vlad Filat said after the meeting.
The head of the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party Dumitru Diacov said they examined the same candidates. “The discussions last because everybody has certain ideas. There were analyzed candidates from the list to see who can secure the necessary 62 votes,” he stated, adding that Veronica Bacalu will probably not come to Chisinau until Wednesday.
”We must identify a candidate who will meet all the criteria of those who will take part in elections. The date of elections will be set by Wednesday if a candidate is agreed. New elements appeared, but we are on the last 100 meters. If Missis Bacalu comes to Chisinau, we will discuss with her. If not, we will discuss with others. All the components of the alliance are ready to identify a candidate,” said the head of the Liberal parliamentary group Ion Hadarca.
The setting of the date of the presidential elections was postponed two times, at the insistence of the Liberal Party. Earlier, Speaker Marian Lupu suggested holding the elections on March 15. The Democrats and the Liberal-Democrats were to find a candidate for the presidency. The final candidate proposed was former deputy governor of the Central Bank Veronica Bacalu, but the Liberals did not accept her, arguing they do not know her.
