AEI initiates talks with PCRM

The Alliance for European Integration (AEI) decided to initiate talks with the Communist Party in order to identify a solution to the political crisis and elect the head of state. The announcement was made after the meeting of the AEI Council on Friday evening. Marian Lupu remains the AIE’s candidate for the presidency, Info-Prim Neo reports. PLDM chairman, Prime Minister Vlad Filat said they took the decision to open talks with the PCRM as they count on the responsibility of all the political players, especially the Communists, in identifying solutions for Moldova to elect its President and be able to continue following the path to reforms. “We decided to invite the Communist Party to negotiations so as to identity a solution in concert. The invitation will be made and we expect an answer. I think we will manage to find a solution so that the head of state is elected this autumn. We will see if the words coincide with the deeds,” said Vlad Filat. The leader of the PL Mihai Ghimpu said the alliance reached the decision that the negotiations with the PCRM are a solution, but the Liberal Party considers that the adoption of a new Constitution is a better solution. “But who knows ... If not the entire Communist group, maybe some of its members will have the courage to say that we can no longer tolerate the created situation and early elections every year. They should realize that the country’s fate is more important,” said Mihai Ghimpu. He also said that he is willing to personally negotiate with the leader of the PCRM Vladimir Voronin. “Voronin is my political opponent, but not a sworn enemy and we will hold this dialogue for the country’s benefit. However, I think we will not achieve much,” said Mihai Ghimpu. PDM chairman Marian Lupu said it is absolutely necessary that these discussions with the PCRM take place. Asked by the journalists if he is ready to give the post of head of state to another candidate, he said they may return to this issue. “Personally, I am flexible. All the discussions must be carried out within the alliance first and then with the opposition. The most important goal is to legally resolve this issue and restore political stability and maintain the European course,” said Marian Lupu. He also said that he is for achieving a result in common by maintaining the current format of the government. “The dialogue will show how flexible the participations will be. The discussions must be transparent and official,” he stressed. Earlier this week, the Constitutional Court pronounced on an application of the ruling alliance and ruled that the legislature cannot institute another threshold for electing the head of state by organic law in case of the repeated dissolution of Parliament following the non-election of the head of state. Article 78 of the Constitution says the President is elected by 3/5 of the votes of the MPs, i.e. 61 votes.
