The Alliance for European Integration (AEI) has to consider a number of issues before making public a joint stance on the constitutional reform. The leaders of the Alliance said they will formulate a joint position by the beginning of March. Related statements were made at a meeting with the delegation of the Venice Commission this morning, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The Venice Commission considers that the Constitution should be modified in the Parliament, by the vote of 2/3 of the MPs. I do not look for support in the legislative body as I cannot find it there. The referendum is also a democratic way of expressing one's opinion,” said Head of Parliament and Acting President Mihai Ghimpu. According to him, the modification of the Constitution requires more time. The bill must be approved by the Constitutional Court first. The procedure can last for six months. The referendum can be held by June 16, when the Parliament will have to be dissolved, as it will be a year during which the legislature was to elect the head of state. Prime Minister Vlad Filat, the leader of the PLDM, said the AEI will make public its position after the member parties hold separate discussions. “Afterward, we will present our stance on how this situation can be remedied,” Filat said. Deputy Head of Parliament Serafim Urecheanu, the leader of the AMN, said the decision is important because it decides Moldova's fate. “A number of questions must be discussed so as we could take a responsible decision.” The president of the PDM Marian Lupu said many things are clear, but others must be carefully considered. The delegation of the Venice Commission had a meeting with the leader of the PCRM Vladimir Voronin on Thursday, February 25. Voronin said he was against the amendment of the Constitution, but for the dissolution of the Parliament and holding of early legislative elections. The delegation will make its viewpoint on the modification of the Constitution known later today.
