Adrian Dupu: 100,000 Bessarabians are waiting for Romanian nationality

About 1 million citizens of the Republic of Moldova obtained Romanian nationality and another 100,000 people are waiting for Romanian nationality, said Adrian Dupu, secretary of state of the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova of the Government of Romania. He noted that this year the Romanian Government has important projects intended for the Republic of Moldova, primarily for Bessarabian students, IPN reports.

The Romanian official said the National Citizenship Authority of Romania processes thousands of files coming from Bessarabians who are eager to regain the Romanian nationality. The Bessarabians have to wait for months to benefit from the advantages of the Romanian nationality as the number of applicants is very large.

“About 1 million Romanians from the left side of the Prut regained the nationality. They are Romanians and prove this by documents. 100,000 files are being processed by the National Citizenship Authority. The pace has been accelerated. The waiting time continues to be very long owing to the very large number of applications. I’m glad that an increasing number of Romanians from the left side of the Prut want to regain the Romanian nationality,” Adrian Dupu stated in the “Special Edition” program on the public TV channel Moldova 1.

He said that the entity he manages this year has a number of important projects intended for Bessarabians. Most of them refer to culture, education and the freedom of the media.

“I recently signed 36 projects intended for the Republic of Moldova, which will be financed directly this year. Bookfest is one of these projects. It will return to Chisinau after a pause of three years and will be held during August 31 – September 4, under the patronage of Presidents Maia Sandu and Klaus Iohannis. Also, at the start of the school year we will offer school supplies to students from rural schools and from socially disadvantaged families so as to discourage school abandonment and to offer the least lucky ones the chance to study. We have important projects designed for students of the State University,” stated Adrian Dupu.

On Tuesday, 78 Moldovan students who achieved remarkable results at Olympiads in the Romanian language and literature and in the history of Romanians were awarded by the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova of the Government of Romania.
