Adolescent depression: What makes children end their lives?
Psychologists point out that adolescence is an extremely vulnerable period, in which difficult situations may be perceived as without solution. Deceptions at school, the loss of a loved one, or the divorce of the parents create in adolescents emotional states that are hard to control. Some of them perceive the rest of their lives as pointless, and resort to actions hardly understandable by their close relatives. Statistics show that most of the suicides are children between 15 and 16 years of age, predominantly boys.
Victoria Gonta, Psy. D., Chair of the Psychology Department of the Free International University of Moldova, told Info-Prim Neo that suicide, as a phenomenon, that points to some predisposing factors within society. Poverty may cause depression, and the latter may lead to suicide. Another factor is the precedent. The more cases of suicide in the family or in the community that the child lives in, the higher is the predisposition to suicide, since this behavior may be perceived as adequate response to difficult life situations. The psychologist mentions that when a suicide happens, it is massively discussed within the society. Some youth who consider themselves marginalized, perceive it as a way to draw attention to them. Without knowing any other means to manifest, they resort to this terrible act. Another determinant factor is the character’s pathology. Such people are predisposed to suicide even if they’re socially active and do not lack attention.
According to the data from the National Healthcare Management Center of the Ministry of Healthcare, 8 minors commited suicide in the first four months of 2012, two girls and six boys. “Depression is more of a women’s malady rather than men’s, yet major depression is the basic determinant of suicide. This means that statistics should be the other way round. However, boys are extremists in their behavior; they are more prone to irrational behavior. A woman is protected by her maternal instincts. She thinks about progeny, about family, about the close ones”, the psychologist explains. Fear is also a factor. Overall, girls are more cowardly and they end up dumping their suicidal idea, while boys, as a rule, go through with it. This kind of courage is socially determined by the preconception that men must not cry or complain. “Not to cry means no to exteriorize emotions. Consequently, it means to suppress them inside ones personality, to accumulate them. Finally these emotions can lead to an emotional outburst, which determines deviant and even suicidal behavior”, says Victor Gonta.
Of the eight minors who committed suicide, one lady overdosed on pills, and the other seven hung themselves. According to the psychologist, those who end their lives through hanging are more depressed. Those who overdose on drugs, jump of roofs, mutilate or shoot themselves, are people who think more about how they are going to end their lives. Victoria Gonta claims that eight others commited suicide in May, but the Ministry of Healthcare did not confirm the cases yet, since they don’t have all the data for the fifth month.
According to the psychologist, all of the victims were up for graduation exams, either middle or high school. Examinations are stressful for children, especially when they are forced into thinking that they might fail. The psychologist recommends parents to support their children in these periods. “The child does not as much money as the parents think. The child needs more parental affection, understanding, communication and time spent together”, mentioned Victoria Gonta.
The psychologist adds that failed attempts overcome real suicides by as much as 20 times. These may be a method of attracting attention, or means to blackmail if the person wants to obtain something. Demonstrative behavior is typical for that age, says Victoria Gonta, yet the close ones should not ignore suicidal attempts, because they may actually point to the child’s suicidal character. If a person has set his mind to end his/her life, then he/she will try again and, therefore, he/she needs the help of a psychologist. Taking into account all suicide cases, not only those involving teens, the last year register a progressive growth rate.
