Adolescence is a difficult period during which the parents need to help the young people to adjust. Psychiatrist of the Community Mental Health Center Ana Codreanu has told IPN that among the most common mental health problems met in adolescence are anxiety, panic disorder, tendency to isolate and, in serious cases, suicidal thoughts.
Contacted for a comment in connection with the European Mental Health Week, Ana Codreanu explained that society plays an essential role in keeping the mental health of adolescents. In an environment in which there is bullying and discrimination, the young people want to isolate or find refuge in gadgets. Sometimes, the young people are rejected by groups and they cannot become involved in out-of-school activities. Special attention should be paid to the exams period when the young people experience anxiety, disquiet and sleep disorders. To easier overcome this period, it is recommended walking outdoors, eating healthily and keeping a regular sleep schedule.
The persons who experience physical and mental discomfort should seek help from a doctor. “If serious changes appear and the adolescent is unable to cope, this should consult a specialist, such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, neurologist, family doctor so as to see where the problem derives from and how this can be solved. The family should be tolerant. Regrettably, there are situations when the parents are too tough on children or are indifferent. The parent should offer support to the child,” said Ana Codreanu.
In Moldova, there are 40 Community Mental Health Center whose specialists supervise about 70,000 persons with different mental health problems. Over 217,000 persons sought help at these centers in 2021.
The European Mental Health Week runs during May 9-13. Emphasis this year is placed on youth mental health.
