Adjustment of Moldtelecom charges may stimulate revitalization of fixed phone market
The National Association of Private ICT Companies believes the adjustment of the charges used by the state-run company Moldtelecom will contribute to the revitalization of the national fixed phone market. “We are convinced that the new executive can launch a new stage for developing Moldova's telecommunications market by adopting an extensive approach. We consider that such a move will attract foreign investment in the field,” the Association says in a communique, quoted by Info-Prim Neo.
The ICT companies say the telecommunications area and the information technology sector in general can stimulate the recovery of the national economy. This field is of strategic importance to Moldova, especially because during the last few years it has turned into a pillar of the national national that contributes to its development.
The companies consider that the reform in the ICT sector should be advanced, especially by taking a series of actions, including adjusting the tariffs on the telecommunications services according to the international practices, and allowing access to the services from which the alternative operators want to benefit, which will enable to diversify the offer for end-users, increase competition and optimize the use of resources in providing services for consumers.
According to the communique, in only eight years the investments in the sector increased ten times to over 10 billion lei. The market grew by about 25% a year. With a profitability that is 30 times higher than in such a strategic sector as agriculture, the ICT market yields 10% of the state budget revenues, like agriculture.
On January 19, the press broadcast a letter issued by the Moldovan communities from 11 states, whereby they request Moldtelecom to decrease the charges on international calls.
Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, officials of SA Moldtelecom said they will make comments on this request in the near future.
