ADEPT furnishes public with information about elections to People’s Assembly of Gagauzia

During at most half a year, elections to the People’s Assembly will be held in Gagauzia. To inform the general public about the elections, the Association for Participatory Democracy ADEPT developed the website alegeri.md to provide information on the issue. Those interested can find information about the previous elections to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, the structure of the regional legislative body, political affiliation of the current members of this body and other information about them.

In a news conference at IPN, ADEPT executive director Igor Boţan said the visitors of alegeri.md can find information about the elections to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia of 1995, 1999, 2003, 2008, 2012 and 2016. For example, the division about the most recent elections, those of 2016, provides information about the results of elections, the number of registered candidates, etc. There is also the list of deputies and information about them, such as the political affiliation, the number of terms in office held, etc.

Igor Boțan noted that by the model of the platform centering on the elections to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia of 2016, there will be furnished information about the elections that will take place in 2021, between January 20 and April 20. “Under the electoral legislation of Gagauzia, the elections are held within three months of the expiry of the mandate of the current People’s Assembly. The mandate expires on January 20 because the first sitting of the new composition of the assembly was held four years ago on January 20,” explained the expert.

The ADEPT director said the electoral profile of the voters in Gagauzia is an important aspect in the context of the parliamentary elections held last year, of the eventual snap parliamentary elections, etc. The analysis revealed a distinct profile of voters in ATU Gagauzia.

The results of the parliamentary elections held since 1994 until 2019 show that the voters in ATU Gagauzia supported a particular political force at national level, which pleaded for Moldova’s integration into the Eurasian Union. It was initially the Party of Communists and then the Party of Socialists, starting with 2014. This was noticed better in the last two presidential elections.

“We are now waiting for the electoral process in the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia. I invite you to follow the electoral processes in the Republic of Moldova in general and by electoral cycle and the method of choosing the elective bodies in the Republic of Moldova,” noted Igor Boțan.

The development of divisions about the elections of the governor and to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia on alegeri.md is supported by the OSCE Mission to Moldova.
