Additional powers for National Library

The National Library of the Republic of Moldova will have additional powers. Now the Library will fulfill the duties of the National Digitization Center. This means that any person interested in the digitization of local-territorial cultural heritage or pages from district or local history – an album of photographs, microfilms and microfiches and other types of documents and publications - will got to the National Library. For the purpose, the Library was outfitted with two modern scanners, including a Robot scanner and a scanner for microfilms and microfiches, IPN reports.

The additional powers were provided after the Cabinet approved amendments to the law on libraries. The National Library will also ensure the functioning of the National Publications Reserve. This means the public libraries from districts will be able to supplement the book collections with newer titles or with titles that they lack by making approaches to the National Library.

The National Center of Statistics of the National Library will provide relevant data and information segmented according to different indicators. It is proposed amplifying the collection of data about the work of houses of culture, music and plastic arts schools and artistic groups of the country through the agency of the Center.

Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan said the national biblioteconomy system resisted in time and became stronger, helping citizens to access subsidies last winter, offering assistance to refugees and to Moldovans in assimilating new technologies. “I’m sure that the amendment of the law on libraries will strengthen the role of libraries in the public service and will further contribute to building and sustainably developing a resilient, informed, inclusive and democratic society,” stated the official.
