The National Resistance Movement ACUM on October 4 protested in front of the Government Building, demanding that the process of recovering the funds stolen from the banking system should be hastened and that hearings in Parliament on the issue should be held without delay. Initially, the Movement announced a protest in front of the Parliament Building, but sympathizers of the Democratic Party staged a counterdemonstration. To avoid altercations, the crowd went to the Government Building to protest, IPN reports.
Vice president of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Inga Grigoriu said the protest was mounted on the initiative of people who wonder where the stolen money is. It became more evident that the stolen funds are used to finance TV channels that ‘lynch’ not only the opposition, but also the citizens of this country. Particular persons are financed and these, instead of being brought to justice, campaign or manage mayor’s offices. “This money could have been used to do many good things for the people. They hide this money with the assistance of state institutions that should defend citizens’ interests, but they safeguard the interests of thieves. What we need to do is to put up resistance and oppose till the end. Their end is close,” she stated.
Expert of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul” Rosian Vasiloi said he came to the protest to show his indignation at the developments in the Republic of Moldova. The government officials refuse to taken part in hearings in Parliament and to present information of public interest about the stolen funds. “This theft affected each citizen of Moldova. My message to the rulers is that the theft of the US$1 billion should be elucidated. Four years have passed since the theft and we have nothing. Candu said in Washington that they know where 90% of the money is, but such messages are disseminated only at foreign level. They do nothing at internal level,” noted the expert.
Ion Baltă, an inhabitant of Chisinau City, said the government should hasten the recovery of the embezzled funds. The fact that the hearings are postponed is not welcomed. “The process should be hastened as the longer is the period since the theft, the more difficult it will be to return the money,” he stated.
The Parliament’s Standing Bureau on October 3 decided that the parliamentary hearings on the measures taken by the authorities to recover the money stolen from the banking system will take place next week.
