The real number of the population living in the Republic of Moldova is 2.6 million people. The number was calculated by applying the international methodology for calculating the population with habitual residence, but also by taking into account the number of people leaving and returning to the country, according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Moldova.

The calculation of the revised number of the population both at national and local level was carried out by the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova, with the support of UNFPA Moldova and Swiss Cooperation in Moldova.

The UNFPA 2018-2022 country program is the organization’s strategic document signed with the Government of the Republic of Moldova, on the basis of which technical and financial assistance is offered in the country’s development process. The current country program runs from 2023 to 2027.
