Activities aimed to democratise local governance are held in Chisinau

The Conflict Resolution Institute INRECO, in partnership with the Chisinau public authorities, is conducting a series of activities aimed to democratise governance at local level, by promoting transparency in decision-making and by enhancing civic participation in local governance, Info-Prim neo reports. According to a press release from the Institute, four experts in the field from Timisoara (Romania) and Ivano-Frankovsk (Ukraine) will be working in Chisinau during February 26-29 as part of the project “Developing the capacity of the civil society in strengthening the partnership with the local authorities”. This group will hold a series of meetings with the Chisinau Mayor General, city councillors, civil servants, and NGOs dealing with community development. The meetings will focus on broadening civic participation in local decision-making. Subsequently, the city councillors as well as the representatives of other parties involved in the project will pay visits to Timisoara (March 2008) and Ivano-Frankovsk (April 2008). The project aims, among other, to study and take over the successful practices in local governance, to work out and implement an efficient mechanism for civic participation in local decision-making. INRECO salutes the initiative of the municipal authorities to adopt a regulation on transparency in decision-making and a regulation on the activity of advisory councils in city districts. In May 2008, an international seminar is planned to be held in Chisinau to present the Citizens’ Guide and debate the draft regulation on the district advisory councils. A project concluding conference will also take place. The project is a common effort of the Conflict Resolution Institute INRECO, the Regional Agency Comunitas (Chisinau), the NGO Resource Agency (Timisoara), and the Association for Economic Development (Ivano-Frankovsk), and implemented in partnership with the local authorities of the three cities. INRECO is a non-profit organisation founded with the aim to contribute to the social and economic development of Moldova in the context of territorial reintegration and European integration, by conducting human resource development programmes, resolving conflict situations, and promoting good governance.
