A number of civic activists who are dissatisfied with the work of Mayor General of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca initiate a referendum on the dismissal of the mayor.
In a news conference at IPN, Victor Chironda, one of the members of the initiative group, said all the problems in Chisinau are the consequence of the incompetence of the mayor and of corruption at the City Hall.
Activist Sergiu Tofilat said the municipality of Chisinau must not be someone’s family business or private property. The City Hall must work for the people’s benefit. Dorin Chirtoaca should put himself in the place of an ordinary person and should travel by public transport during intense heat or stay in the evening near Voluntarilor St, where an unpleasant smell comes from the wastewater treatment station.
Vitalii Voznoi, of the same initiative group, call on the residents of Chisinau, business entities and nongovernmental organizations to join in. He also invited the political parties to support the initiative, if they agree to obey a code of ethics by which to pledge not to attribute the initiative and its possible positive result to themselves.
The activists agreed a mechanism for communicating with the people who want to become involved. On the platform referendumchisinau.wordpress.com, those who want to take part can fill out a form. They will be then contacted by members of the initiative group and will be informed where they should collect signatures in favor of the plebiscite.
Next week, the mayor general will be invited to the first meeting of the initiative group, as the law provides. Afterward, after the court registers the initiative group and the Central Election Commission issues the prescription lists, its members will start to collect signatures.
To initiate a referendum for dismissing the mayor general, at least 65,000 signatories of the inhabitants of Chisinau municipality must be collected during a month. The activists propose that the referendum should be held simultaneously with the presidential elections, on October 30, so as not to generate additional costs.
