Active aging should remain on Government’s agenda, HelpAge

Active aging should remain on the Government’s agenda as the elderly people have the same rights and these do not change with age, HelpAge International Moldova director Tatiana Sorocan said in a workshop held on June 15 on the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, IPN reports

According to Tatiana Sorocan, the organization she represents and the partner nongovernmental organizations encourage the improvement of the protection of the elderly’s rights within the global campaign “Age Demands Action”.

Another step is the encouragement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection to take part in the session of the United Nations Open-Ended Working Group on Aging that is organized annually. This year it will be held in July and will discuss the elderly people’s right to long-term and palliative care and the right to autonomy, independence and a violence-free life.

The UN General Assembly designated June 15 as the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Campaigns to promote the rights of the elderly people are staged annually on this day.
