Acting president promises there will be amnesty on Independence Day

Moldova’s Acting President Marian Lupu pledged that there will be amnesty on the occasion of the Independence Day, if not until August 27 than in September, Info-Prim Neo reports. Marian Lupu said he proposed drafting an amnesty bill so that it is debated in Parliament and eventually improved by the MPs. “This does not mean that the President does not have instruments for granting amnesty himself. The idea was to collectively discuss the bill and submit proposals for improving it so that it is adopted by all the lawmakers,” he stated during an event. According to him, the special commission working under the President of Moldova, which convenes once in a quarter, is to take a decision concerning the amnesty. “We will grant amnesty as on 15 years and 10 years of independence. If we do not manage until August 27, it will happen later, in September,” said Marian Lupu. He also said that owing to inappropriate moves and a low political culture, the agenda of the public debates is insignificant. “I think that not only the level of culture, but also the content and relevance of these political debates decreased. We should together contribute to remedying the situation and developing the political debates so as to explain what we do and what reforms are implemented to society. After the vacation, as party leader and Head of Parliament, I will take steps to improve the quality of these debates,” said Marian Lupu. The Ministry of Justice refused to approve the bill allowing amnestying 600 detainees on the occasion of 20 years of independence, arguing the crime rate in the country is high.
