Moldova’s acting president Mihai Ghimpu has condemned in a statement the explosion that occurred in downtown Chisinau on October 14, as well as “the forces behind it”, in the context of a series of threats made against the Chisinau mayor and the Prime Minister, Info-Prim Neo reports. In an earlier statement, the Moldovan Communists Party said treating the situation from such a perspective was “a well planned campaign to discredit the country’s main opposition party”. The acting head of state has expressed his deep concern about the explosion of a grenade which hurt over 40 persons, as well as threats launched earlier against the Prime Minister and the general mayor of the capital. “I firmly condemn this act of violence and those threats, I condemn the cynicism of those who orchestrated and committed it on the day when the Chisinau people were celebrating the city’s dedication day and the feast of the Protect ion of the Mother of God”. “It’s beyond me to admit that this unprecedented act of violence could be premeditated, with the purpose of destabilizing the country in general and attract civil society into some dangerous scenarios and games aiming at distorting our course toward integration into the civilized world. I refuse to believe that in our country there can be a political party that could resort to such terrorist acts, in order to propagate panic and destabilize the situation in the capital city and in the country. However, the gravity of this antihuman act admits the hypothesis that there could be persons or groups of persons who aim to intimidate the population and damage the reputation of the current government”, Ghimpu’s statement reads. While condemning the criminal attempt in the Great National Assembly Square, including the forces behind it, Mihai Ghimpu urges people to keep calm and maintain peace in society. “In these circumstances, I’m asking the political parties and their leaders to refrain from hasty statements which could incite to hatred or mistrust within society. I deeply express my hope that, in a democratic society, any disagreements, including of political nature, can be solved exclusively in a civilized manner, based on generally accepted principles and norms of social coexistence”. In a similar statement, the Communists Party (PCRM) has expressed disagreement with the interpretation of the events as “a result of actions by political opponents”. “PCRM believes that such an interpretation of the events by the representatives of the law enforcement bodies and some media institutions is part of a well planned campaign to discredit the country’s main opposition party”. PCRM has added it follows with attention every “unfounded accusation and calumny” against it and will employ every legal instrument to defend its reputation.
