The Nistru war is not yet over. It turned into a conflict that still goes on. Related statements were made by senior officials at the Grieving Mother monument on the Memory Day marked on March 2, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The 20 years of independence showed the fight continues. Russia pledged to withdraw its troops from Transnistria, but continues to support the breakaway republic and arm it,” said Head of Parliament and Acting President Mihai Ghimpu. “However, we have our own course. It will be hard, but I'm sure we will make progress. This empire that subdued us 200 years ago should admit that these people endured enough for defending their land.” Ghimpu added that Moldova suffered the consequences of the war and that the Transnistrian region steals money from the national budget as it is an uncontrolled area. Prime Minister Vlad Filat said time has come for this conflict to be solved by definite steps, not false statements. Moldova's first President Mircea Snegur thanked the participants in the war for being responsible and for fighting against the Russian bandits and the local separatists. “March 2 was not selected randomly. On this date, the UN accepted Moldova as a member, showing that it recognized its independence and statehood,” Snegur said. The officials attending the event said there are enough proofs showing that Russia contributed to the start of the Nistru war in March 1992. The judgment passed by the ECHR in the case of the Ilie Ilascu group is a relevant example. Also today, the Chisinau City Hall announced that it will provide financial assistance to the invalids and families of those who died in the war. 193 persons received or will receive by 500 lei from the local social support fund. The lists of recipients were compiled by the National Union of Independence War Veterans. On March 2, it is 18 years of the start of the armed conflict on the Nistru that lasted for about six months. 286 persons of the 29,000 who took part in the war were killed, while 289 remained disabled.
