Academy of Sciences says official language is called Romanian

The Academy of Sciences of Moldova reiterated its stance that the name of the official language is Romanian, while the national history is the history of Romanians. A resolution to this effect was endorsed by the scientific community in the conference “20 years of the proclamation of Moldova’s independence”, Info-Prim Neo reports. The participants in the conference pleaded for the reintroduction of the History of Romanians and Universal History courses in preuniversity education institutions. The historical education should end with an ordinary exam after the ninth grade and with the Baccalaureate exam after the twelfth grade. “We are for adjusting the constitutional norms and legislation concerning the name of the official language to the scientific truth and the provisions of the Declaration of Independence of Moldova. We are also in favor of a broad constitutional reform aimed at ending the political and social impasse. We suggest that the Declaration of Independence should become a component part of the Constitution,” said the president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova Gheorghe Duca. According to the academician, the Soviet occupation that lasted for almost half a century ended on August 27, 1991, when the Republic of Moldova was constituted as a sovereign, independent and democratic state. “If we read and reread the Declaration of Independence, we see that it sets out two scientific and historical truths – the Romanian identity of the native population of the country and the prominent European orientation of this people,” said Gheorghe Duca. He also said that if all the politicians had fully respected the Declaration of Independence, Moldova would have been now a prosperous member state of the EU, as the Baltic Countries, with modern economy and without political speculations about the identity, language and history that damage the country’s image. Attending the conference, Romanian Ambassador in Chisinau Marius Lazurca said the social, political and economic development of Moldova must be assessed from the angle of the Declaration of Independence so as to see how the politicians and the people remember its content. He stressed that the Declaration of Independence is a profoundly national and European document. Among the participants in the scientific conference were Elena Beleakova, director general of the Interethnic Relations Bureau of Moldova, Gheorghe Cojocaru, Doctor of History, lecturer and director of the Academy of Sciences’ Institute of History, State and Law, Anatol Taranu, Doctor of History and lecturer, and Vasile Bahnaru, Doctor Habilitate of Philology, lecturer and director of the Academy of Sciences’ Philology Institute.
