About half of Moldovans considers mass media in Moldova is censored
Approximately half of the population (48%) considers that mass media in Moldova is not free to report on the news and commentaries they want as they are censored by the government, says the Public Opinion Barometer for October 2008, Info-Prim Neo reports.
41% of the respondents (by 10% more than in 2006) think that the public broadcaster Teleradio-Moldova reports on the events that favor the ruling party. Only every fifth respondent considers that the political parties have equal access to the public television and radio.
At the same time, 65% of the population does not feel free to openly criticize the government.
The major source of information for the population remains television (88%). 55% of those surveyed trust this source of information the most. The radio is the main source of information for 44% of the respondents, while newspapers for every fifth respondent.
The survey was carried out between September 26 and October 20, 2008 and covered a sample of 1,100 persons older than 18 from 76 settlements, except the Transnistrian region. The margin of error is ±3%.
The research was organized by the Public Policy Institute with assistance from Soros Moldova Foundation. It was conducted by the Center of Sociological, Politological and Psychological Investigations and Analysis (Civis) and verified by the research institute Magenta Consulting.
