About 9,000 old people in villages benefit from support of social reintegration project
About 9,000 disadvantaged people have directly benefited from the support provided within the project “Social reintegration of underprivileged, marginalized, and old people in rural areas in southern Moldova”, launched in April 2005.
The project was implemented by HelpAge International, in partnership with the associations “The Second Breath”, “Social-rural Initiative” and 12 local community NGOs. The project’s missions consist in creating groups of supporting old people in providing home assistance in seven villages and towns in southern Moldova.
The regional representative of HelpAge International, Lewis Temple, stated Friday, December 15, that in the case of helping vulnerable older people, the support can be provided not only on the part of the Government, but also on the part of the village where these persons live. The project’s idea was not to financially help the underprivileged people, but to determine the inhabitants of the village to help each other.
Executive Director of the Organisation “Social-rural Initiative” Maria Brodesco stated that such projects are just “drops” meant to change the situation of old people living in Moldova. “Despite the poverty existing, we try to carry out activities that would change the aspects or standards of life of old people, while those benefiting from the project’s services have realized that their situation can be changed only when they get involved in changing it.
HelpAge International representative Nadeem Haider stated that at present the project’s partners are looking for funds from different donors for continuing the implementation of such projects to support underprivileged people in Moldova.
The national Network of organisations to support old people and a Guide to develop and support organisations of old people have been launched at the festivity of project’s finalization.
The project was funded by TACIS-IBBP and Irish Aid. HelpAge International is a worldwide network of non-profit organisations that set their goal to work with disadvantaged people from all over the world in order to improve their standard of life.
