About 500 trolleybuses and buses operated by Regia Transport Electric Chisinau and the Urban Bus Fleet have been equipped with bactericidal air purification systems to stave off respiratory infections, an initiative funded by the European Union as part of the MOVE IT Like Lublin Project.
The donation of bactericidal equipment takes place in two stages. In 2022, the first batch of 682 such systems was supplied. Recently, the installation of another 310 recirculators was completed, strengthening the municipality’s efforts to ensure a healthier environment for travelers. The donation is worth over 144,000 euros.
Chisinau Deputy Mayor Ilie Ceban stated that the project represents a significant step in the modernization of public transport in the capital. “We are glad to have the opportunity to borrow international best practices in this field and bring innovation to our services. Thanks to the support offered by the European Union, we managed to purchase the latest generation bactericidal recirculators, which will have a positive impact on the quality of travel. The modernization of public transport is a priority for our administration, and this initiative represents a significant step in achieving this goal”, said Ilie Ceban.
The devices use ultraviolet rays to disinfect air, destroying the DNA of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens, thus providing a safer and healthier environment in public transport.
The MOVE IT Like Lublin Project is implemented under a partnership between the Chisinau municipality and the municipality of Lublin, Poland. The total budget of the project is 3,500,000 euros, of which 3,325,000 euros is granted by the European Union, and 175,000 euros are allocated by the Chisinau City Hall.
