About 40,000 persons infected with chronic viral hepatitis

There are about 40,000 persons suffering from cryonic viral hepatitis in Moldova. About 2,000 new cases were recorded last year. In over 70% of the cases, the hepatitis is of type A, IPN reports, quoting the statistical data made public by the Ministry of Health on the eve of World Hepatitis Day.

By the transmission method, the sexually transmitted infection prevails. Most of the cases of acute HVB and HVC in 2014 were reported among adults. The HVA infection affects mainly the children of preschool age or from first-fourth grades.

The incidence of viral hepatitis A has lately increased. The epidemic process through HVA in 2014 was more intense in the districts of Straseni, Ungheni, and Calarasi. Vital hepatitis B, C, D can be prevented by reducing the risk of sexual transmission, by getting vaccines against hepatitis and by sterilizing the medical tools. Hepatitis A can be prevented by observing personal hygiene rules, namely washing the hands before having meals and after using the WC, drinking water from safe sources and disinfecting the toys and the wells.

Viral hepatitis B can be prevented by a vaccine endorsed by the WHO, which ensures a high protection level. According to specialists, early vaccination prevents infection. In Moldova, immunization against HVB is included in the national vaccination calendar and is free for children and grownups from the high-risk groups.

World Hepatitis Day, observed on July 28 every year, aims to raise global awareness of hepatitis and encourage prevention, diagnosis and treatment. This year the event is celebrated under the slogan “Prevent hepatitis. Act now”.
