About 4,000 packs of contraband cigarettes seized on border

Customs officers confiscated approximately 4,000 packets of cigarettes on the Moldovan-Romanian border over the weekend. According to a communiqué from the Customs Service, there were foiled three attempts to take cigarettes out of the country illegally – two by train and one by car, Info-Prim Neo reports. The first batch of over 1,500 packs of cigarettes was discovered in a freight train at the Giurgiulesti – Galati border crossing point. The cigarettes were hidden in the body of the engine. The train driver said he did not know that the cigarettes were there. In the second case, a 36-year-old Moldovan tried to smuggle 2,300 packs of cigarettes hidden in the ceiling of the international train “Chisinau-Bucharest”. The third consignment of 200 packets of cigarettes was found at the Leuseni customs office in a Volvo-H12 car driven by a man aged 45.
