About 40% of able to work Moldovans are aboard
The number of Moldovans who went abroad to work over the last two years is stable. Currently, about 40% of the able to work population are aboard. With the money sent home, the Moldovans from abroad support the national economy with 20% of the Gross Domestic Product. The data were provided in an international seminar themed “New trends in migration – demographic aspects” that was held in Chisinau on January 17, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Moldova’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vlad Lupan said that migration plays an essential role in the European integration process and the visa liberalization process. Migration is a problem for Moldova. There is practically no family without a member or a relative abroad. “Migration is a process that cannot be stopped, but it can be managed. The free people will always be able to travel. Migration is not a new phenomenon. The internal migration in the EU is a real phenomenon witnessed daily. In such a situation, there appear different trends and realities in the countries of origin,” he stated.
UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Nicola Harrington-Buhay said that Moldova forms part of many projects designed to help cope with the challenges of time and it managed to achieve certain successes already. There are yet aspects that must be improved, including the rights of the Roma and the access to education and culture. A tolerant attitude is needed for the implementation of policies on migration so as to ensure the peaceful co-existence of the migrants. The official said that the UN family is ready to provide assistance to Moldova on the path to European integration.
The head of the IOM Mission to Moldova Antonio Polosa said that migration affects both the demographic aspect and the economic aspect of Moldova and more policies are needed in order to reduce these effects. Migration cannot be addressed by an institution only as this element must be omnipresent.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, more than 300,000 Moldovans emigrate every year.
