A company that purchased walnut kernel in Moldova and exported it to a number of European states is suspected of fraudulent activity. As a result of searches at the company, the police seized about 300 tonnes of walnut kernel, IPN reports.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases, when being questioned, none of the private individuals indicated in the purchase documents confirmed that they sold kernel to the business entity.
During searches on March 6, the police found and seized about 300 tonnes of walnut kernel worth US$1.840 million in a number of units of transport.
A representative of the company and a person who supplied the company with walnuts without documents of origin were arrested. Another two persons are investigated as suspects. These face three to ten years behind bars and a fine of 300,000 to 550,000 lei.
