Approximately 200 refugee children from Ukraine applied to be enrolled in the first grade in 31 schools in Chisinau. The General Division of Education, Youth and Sports said that 159 Ukrainian children will attend municipal institutions teaching in Russian, 31 children were enrolled in schools teaching in Ukrainian and seven persons chose institutions teaching in Romanian, IPN reports.
Most of the refugee children from Ukraine applied to be registered in the first grade at “Taras Shevchenko” Secondary School in Râșcani district of the capital city. Extensive repair works are taking place in the institution. Until August 25, the classrooms on the first floor will be rehabilitated. Also, rehabilitation works will be carried out in the psychologist’s office and the medical office to ensure an appropriate educational environment, the Division noted.
The administration of the secondary school received 50 applications from families of refugees from Ukraine. In the 2024-2025 school year, refugee children will learn in Ukrainian, an initiative supported by the Chisinau City Hall.
As many as 9,772 applications for enrollment in the first grade in municipal educational institutions have been submitted so far.
