Approximately 20 hectares of reeds and dry grass caught fire in Manta village of Cahul district in the evening of January 4. According to the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, it was hard to extinguish the fire owing to poor visibility and strong wind, IPN reports.

The fire started on a portion of land situated between the Prut River and the Manta Lake. The firefighters reached the scene after crossing the lake by a pneumatic boat and walking 3 km, carrying the necessary equipment with them. The fire was localized after almost three hours. The flames didn’t extend to the wooded strip located nearby.

The circumstances of the fire are yet to be established. The firemen call on the population to obey the anti-fire rules so as to avoid situations of risk.
