About 10,000 people diagnosed with diabetes annually
The number of people diagnosed with diabetes doubles every year. Moreover, specialists say that for each diagnosed patient there are 3 others who are unaware of their condition, Info-Prim Neo reports.
National Clinic Hospital endocrinologist Dumitru Harea said that the factors that increase the risk of diabetes are a sedentary way of life, obesity and smoking.
“Yearly, the number of diabetes patients increases by 10,000 new cases. After 10-15 years of untreated diabetes, people suffer ocular, renal and feet complications. Actually, the number of people with diabetes is higher, considering undiagnosed cases. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates that 9 in 100 Moldovans have diabetes”, said Dumitru Harea.
Currently, there are 67,000 patients diagnosed with diabetes in Moldova, including 12,000 who are insulin-dependent.
The World Diabetes Day is marked on November 14, at the initiative of the IDF, with the support of the World Health Organization.
