Aaron Cook eliminated after first fight

The naturalized British taekwondo fighter Aaron Cook was eliminated in the 1/8 finals of the Olympic Games in Rio. Despite being ranked 2nd in the world in the 80 kg category, Cook was beaten 2-14 by Wei-Ting Liu from Taipei, IPN reports.

Liu lost his next fight against Tunisia’s Oussama Queslati and thus Cook was eliminated from the competition. Last year, Cook managed to win Moldova’s first medal at a World Championship and was one of the favorites at the Olympics. Champion in the 80 kg category became Ivory Coast’s Cisse Sallah Junior.

Evgheni Nedealco had a similar fate in the free wrestling tournament. He was defeated 2-13 by Kazakhstan’s Galymzhan Usserbayev and was knocked out of the competition. Champion in the 74 kg category became Iran’s Hassan Aliazam Yazdanicharati.
