A woman was exposed to danger of sexual violence at police station, activist

The chairman of the public association “Moldova mea” Fiodor Ghelici said a woman who is the mother of three was exposed to the danger of sexual violence in a perverse form at a police station. The activist noted everything happened after the woman, together with her relatives, found a wallet and, when she wanted to return it by taking it to the police station, she was accused of taking a part of the money from the wallet and was requested to return it to the owner.

In a news conference at IPN, Fiodor Ghelici said this case happened at the end of last December and he found out about it after the women and her relatives sought help from the association. According to him, this is an outrageous case when a woman is exposed to the danger of sexual violence in a perverse form, is humiliated and her rights are being flagrantly violated.

In the same news conference, the woman involved Virgina Crăciun related that one evening she went to the store together with her husband, brother and sister-in-law. When going out of the shop, they saw a shopping bag with a wallet in it and her sister-in-law took it. The woman said there were €200, US$ 102 and 1,800 lei in it. The next morning, they decided to go to the police. Before setting off, they were phoned by a related man who is a police officer and he told them the police are looking for them as they were seen on a video recording. When they went to the inspectorate in Buiucani district, the woman said she remained alone in the female investigator’s office where there was one more man dressed in civvies and who said he was the brother of the wallet’s owner.

Virginia Crăciun said that when she restored the wallet, she was asked where the rest of the money was. When she said she took no money, the man insulted her and threatened her he would close the office and would rape her. The woman said she was later warned by the investigator that the man was aggressive.

After spending the whole day at the inspectorate, other interrogations followed and she was offered a lawyer only at the third interrogation. Virginia Crăciun said neither she, not her sister-in-law are to blame as they took no money from that wallet.

Virginei Crăciun’s sister-in-law Inga Bogdan said they didn’t inform the shop’s administration about the found in the hope that they will get a reward from the owner when they restore it.

Fiodor Ghelici said that when he found out about this case, he went and discussed with the investigator, but the woman denied that she committed the invoked violations. Fiodor Ghelici called on the administration of the Ministry of the Interior to examine this case and take it under control.
