A number of parties did not get involved in election campaign in Chisinau in order not to disperse voters
The parties that did not field candidates for the mayoralty of Chisinau said they took such a decision in order not to disperse the voters and in order to ensure the continuity of the initiated reforms. Some of these parties announced they will support current mayor Dorin Chirtoaca.
Ana Tcaci, president of [the Party for Moldova's Union], told Info-Prim Neo that her party did not put forward a candidate for mayor of Chisinau because there are enough candidates. “We will throw support to Dorin Chirtoaca because we consider that the Democratic forces must have one candidate,” said Ana Tcaci. She called on the other parties that fielded candidates to withdraw them and support the current mayor. “If we are Liberals and Democrats, we must act together and promote the democratic ideas. We should not be ambitious and vainglorious and support one candidate,” she said.
However, the Party for Moldova's Union has a list of candidates for seats on the Chisinau Municipal Council. In the ballot, it is under No. 15. It also put forward candidates for councilors and mayors in other settlements of Moldova.
Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, chairman of [the Party for Country and People] Nicolae Utica said that his party did not take part in the election campaign for the mayoralty of Chisinau as they did not want to disperse the voters. “The party's political bureau decided that we will support Mister Chirtoaca. We must join forces and prevent the Communists from returning to power,” he said. The Party for Country and People did not propose candidates for seats on the Chisinau Council.
[The Centrist Union] considered the time was not opportune for fielding a candidate for mayor of Chisinau. “There are too many candidates per square meter in Chisinau. It's not worth spending money and time. We are competing in the districts were our local organizations are stronger,” said the party's leader Mihai Petrache.
Andrei Dumbraveanu, secretary general of [the Ecologist Party “Green Alliance”], said the party did not get involved in the election campaign in Chisinau because it does not have time, but fielded candidates in other settlements of the country. According to Dumbraveanu, a large part of the Chisinau members of the Ecologist Party will support the Liberal candidate Dorin Chirtoaca.
Fourteen candidates will contend for the mayoralty of Chisinau on June 5. They include an independent and thirteen candidates fielded by parties. The Liberal Democratic Party earlier withdrew its candidate Victor Bodiu from the race.
