A new FAO mission will propose concrete measures needed to overcome the agricultural crisis in Moldova

In two weeks, a new Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) mission will visit Moldova in order to perform a thorough analysis of the current agricultural situation and will suggest concrete measures to overcome the agricultural crisis. The FAO representative in Moldova, Maria Kadlecikova, announced that a group of experts performed a previous analysis on the consequences of drought on Moldova’s agricultural conditions, concluding that the current situation is disastrous. According to FAO experts, the negative effects of the drought were further deteriorated by excessive parcelling of the agricultural land, the incapacity to apply complex measures to maintain the quality and resistance of the soil, etc. FAO advises the Government to modify radically the agro-technologic system, particularly with reference to adjusting the agrarian sector to new climate conditions. The need to launch the method of crop rotation, local seed tree species, introducing organic fertilisers and extending areas of irrigated terrains, were areas particularly emphasised upon. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations showed interest in supporting the requests made by Moldova’s authorities to potential donors, in order to attract resources that will help the country to overcome the agricultural crisis and to ensure the security of the state with reference to nutrition.
