A good Christian celebrates the Patron Saint's Day as a Christian. Info-Prim Neo interview with father Valeriu Potoroaca, pastor of St. Pantelemon Church from Chisinau

[ - October 14, when Orthodox Christians mark the Day of the Veil of the Mother of God, is also the day of Chisinau's Patron Saint. Which is the significance of this holiday?] - The Veil of God's Mother is one of the big holidays of the Orthodox Christians and it commemorates an event occurred in the first half of the 10th century, when a wonder happened in the Blacherne Church from Constantinople, during the reign of Emperor John the Sage. The clothes, the veil and the girdle of the Mother of God were kept in that Church. During the night of October 1, two holy men praying in the church lifted their eyes and saw Holy Mary praying as she was accompanied by hosts of saints. Her veil covered the people in the church, as she was staying in the air. They even heard her praying her beloved Son Jesus Christ: “Heavenly Father receive everyone glorifying Thy Name. Receive this prayer and deliver us from every evil and hardship.” [ - Why did Chisinau choose its Day on this day?] - As a rule the day of a locality is also the day of the Patron Saint of its church. Chisinau being the capital, the day was chosen because of other religious reasons. When the God's Mother's Veil is celebrated, the holiday coincides with the wonder-making icon of the Mother of God from Harbovat Monastery. This icon is very old and has a special history. It appeared in Basarabia back in 1790. After it made a number of wonders at its monastery, from 1859 it used to be brought every year to Chisinau from October 1 to April 23, so the icon became a protector of our nation. [ - What should a good Christian do on the day of his/her locality's Patron Saint?] - On this Day, a good Christian should first attend the Holy Liturgy and then to celebrate as a Christian. [ - Do more Christians come to the church on this day?] - It's difficult to assess, our church is always full. [ - Is the tradition to feast and receive guests on this day Christian, or rather heathen?] - The tradition to receive guests is Christian, is indispensable of any church holiday and has its origin in the brotherly agapae of the first Christian communities. But thus tradition is not fully observed if one forgets that it starts with the Holy Mass in the church and it is compromised if receiving guests turns into drunken revelry. [ - Chisinau chose to celebrate the Day of its Patron Saint instead of the City Day. Do you think thus the Chisinau folks became more spiritual, more religious?] - The City Day was more secular and was celebrated more heathenishly. I think, during all this period, the Chisinau residents have become purer. Although not all of them come to the Holy Liturgy on this day, the ones who do influence their neighbors with prayers beneficently.
