Singer Lenuta Burghila intends to launch a project titled “The Doina[*] of Hope” and themed “Haiti – Ruins and Pain... Moldova – A Spark of Hope”, to support morally and spiritually the victims of earthquakes in Haiti, Info-Prim Neo reports. The singer told a news conference on Thursday, February 18, she intends to send an open letter to Moldovan Prime Minister Vladimir Filat and an address to the international organizations asking logistical support for the new project. She argued that the victims in Haiti were offered millions in aid, yet they needed empathic support, too. “I wish to go there and offer them a Moldovan doina (...) which would be more appropriate to the current state of the spirits of that country. Millions are offered to them, but I thought they miss support from the heart, the reason why I'm launching this project”, says Burghila. Lenuta Burghila is best known in Moldova for her leading role in a nationwide televised project called “The Caravel of Culture”, which was traveling from village to village organizing concerts with the locals. Financing for the program, which was shown on the public television Moldova 1, was suspended, as critics accused Burghila of spending too much taxpayers' money. However, Burghila argues that the 700 or so concerts and events held during four years of the project's existence were worth all the money. [*] Doina is a traditional musical style, usually melancholic and lamenting.
