A decade without statistics on Transnistria

Since 2000 there haven't been any data related to the educational system in the Transnistrian region. The authorities in Tiraspol refuse to let international organizations survey the situation in the region, said UNICEF Representative for Moldova Alexandra Yuster at a meeting with reporters on Friday. “We've tried many a time to conduct some surveys on the social situation in the Transnistrian region but all our efforts have failed”, said Alexandra Yuster. The UNICEF Representative said that according to some information the incidence of HIV/AIDS in the Transnistrian region could by three times the level registered on the western side of the Nistru. This is an issue whose solving requires the concentrated efforts of the relevant authorities as well as of the entire society. Other participants in the meeting, including journalists from the Transnistrian region, said the authorities in Tiraspol conceal statistics in the hopes to disguise the real situation; only those figures are revealed which can boost the authorities' image.
