Romanian soldiers detonated the Parjoaia rock on the Danube on Monday, using 100 kilograms of explosives, to redirect a greater flow of water to the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant. The intervention takes place in the context of the historic drop in the Danube level, which is putting pressure on the plant’s cooling system, IPN reports.

According to the Romanian Ministry of National Defense, the controlled explosion removed the rock, and in the coming period, dredging works and the installation of barges on the Bala branch will continue, to direct the water to the Old Danube, from where the power plant’s cooling system is supplied.

The intervention takes place in the context in which the flow of the Danube at the entrance to Romania is forecast to decrease in the coming days to approximately 1,400 cubic meters per second, a level close to the historical minimum recorded in 1985 and almost three times lower than the multiannual average for August.

Due to the reduced flow, the plant’s reactor 1 has been shut down for almost a week, and authorities warn that if the situation does not improve, the operation of reactor 2 could also be affected.

The Romanian government has declared a state of alert for August due to a drop in energy production due to drought and low Danube flows. The government has allocated funds for hydrotechnical works in the Cernavoda area and has called for a voluntary reduction in energy consumption during peak hours.

The government has handed over five high-capacity motor pumps to the Chisinau City Hall for works at the water intake station in Vadul lui Voda. According to the authorities, the equipment will contribute to the municipality’s preparation for a possible water supply crisis. One of the motor pumps has already been put into operation, IPN reports.

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan stated that the request came from the Chisinau City Hall. He specified that the motor pumps were offered from the stocks of the Material Reserves Agency to support the works to increase the capacity of the capture station.

“Providing citizens with water, in the conditions of pronounced drought and the low water level in the Novodnestrovsk reservoir, must be a priority for us, regardless of whether we are talking about the Government or local authorities”, the Prime Minister said.

The first motor pump, with a capacity of 1,200 cubic meters per hour, was delivered on Friday and put into operation in Vadul lui Voda. The other four are to be installed, which will raise the total pumping capacity to 5,200 cubic meters per hour and allow water to be transported over long distances.

The Prime Minister urged the institutions subordinate to the Government and the Chisinau City Hall to collaborate to identify the best solutions. According to him, the goal is to ensure that the municipality can be supplied with water even in the event of a potential crisis on the Dniester River.
